Katherine Sunwall, a native of Great Falls, Mont., is a 2007 graduate of Montana Western with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. She was a two-sport student-athlete for the Bulldogs achieving high honors in both sports.
In volleyball, she was the 2002 Frontier Conference Freshman of the Year and a three-time first team all-conference selection. Sunwall was a first team NAIA all-region selection, the conference player of the year and an NAIA third team All-American selection.
In basketball, Sunwall was also selected as the conference freshman of the year, was a three-time first team all-conference selection, a three-time defensive player of the year and conference player of the year in her senior season.Â
She earned NAIA All-American second team honors after her junior season. In her senior season, she led the nation in blocks and was a first team NAIA and WBCA All-American selection.
Sunwall remains the shot block leader in all categories of the Bulldog women’s basketball record book.
After graduation, Sunwall played one year of professional basketball in Finland. She now teaches kindergarten at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Great Falls and is an assistant basketball coach at Great Falls High School.
Sunwall is in an elite class of Bulldog alums. She is a member of both the athletic and education hall of fame (to be inducted in the spring of 2026) at Montana Western.
