Ed Mattix, a native of Plains, Mont., is a 1952 graduate of Western Montana College (WMC) with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a major in science and minors in mathematics, physical education and social studies. He later earned a Masters in guidance and school administration

After graduation from Hot Springs High School, he enlisted in the army and served during World War II. After his discharge, he enrolled at Western.

Mattix was a four-year letterman in football, and was a two-time all-conference selection in football. He played on the 1949 Montana Collegiate Conference championship team. The 1949 season was not only a championship season but was the first season the Bulldogs played their home games at Vigilante Field.

He was active on campus in M-Club, International Relations Club, the WMC chapter of the Montana Education Association and student council. Mattix was elected freshman class vice-president and senior class president. He was selected to Who’s Who his senior year.

His career in education began in Great Falls, Mont. as a junior high math instructor. In 1969, Mattix was named principal of West Junior High School and served in that position until his retirement in 1984.

In retirement, Mattix enjoyed spending time with family and friends and enjoying a wide variety of hobbies. He passed away Oct. 19, 2014.
